Construction projects continue around the GreenBelt

The Carrollton GreenBelt is neighboring a few active construction zones. The trail has been removed in two spots: at the corner of Clinic Avenue and Dixie Street at Tanner Campus; and along University Drive (off Maple Street) at UWG Campus. Both sections will be re-opened once the construction is complete. In the meantime, please follow the GREENBELT DETOUR signs and exercise caution while passing the affected areas.

Tanner Detour Info

UWG Detour:

The affected UWG section starts just past the intersection with Aycock Drive (traveling counterclockwise, from the Row Hall building / Hobbs Farm Park, towards Maple Street / Hays Mill Park) and continues along Maple Street. To bypass the construction, cross University Drive, turn right onto the sidewalk, continue to Maple Street, and turn right. The Maple Street sidewalk will connect to the GreenBelt Trail before crossing West Ga Drive!

Coming from Hays Mill (clockwise) – follow the signs and stay on Maple Street sidewalk, cross and turn left onto University Drive, turn left at the Aycock Street intersection and follow the GreenBelt as it travels behind Row Hall.

đźš· đźšł Please follow the DETOUR signs posted by The City of Carrollton, GA to find your way.

👷‍♂️👷‍♂️👷‍♂️Please be cautious and watch for construction activity as crews move from place to place daily.

GreenBelt Detour Dixie St 3/5/2021

‼️⚠️ CAUTION ⚠️‼️👷‍♂👷‍♂👷‍♂ Due to construction work on and around a short section of the Carrollton Greenbelt, the trail is closed between Roop Street/Elder Circle (past the Triangle Park) AND Dixie Street (section highlighted in red).

đźš· đźšł Please follow the DETOUR signs posted by The City of Carrollton, GA to find your way. The suggested detour (following the trail counter-clockwise) is to follow the turn right off the trail in front of the Carrollton Housing Authority’s office and follow the Dixie Street sidewalk (WEST SIDE of the street) to the first lights (Southwire Drive) and cross to the EAST SIDE of Dixie Street. Then follow the sidewalk to the GreenBelt Trail (across from Clinic Avenue and next to Tillman Eye Center).

👷‍♂️👷‍♂️👷‍♂️Please be cautious and watch for construction – utility work is being done along the west side of Dixie Street and crews are moving from place to place daily. Bonus: The main loop of the Carrollton GreenBelt turns right behind the eye clinic – but be sure to check out the new Tanner-to-Downtown spur just a few feet down Dixie!

GreenBelt Spur Now Open – City of Carrollton

A ribbon-cutting ceremony this week marked the opening of the first trail spur connecting the main route of the Carrollton GreenBelt to downtown.

This is the first section of trail spur that has been constructed since the completion of the primary GreenBelt loop in 2017. It intersects the main loop near Southwire’s corporate headquarters, runs through the Tanner Health System campus and finishes at Lucille Avenue, adjacent to the Stewart House. Three property owners donated easements for the trail spur: the Miles family, the Stewart House and Tanner Health System. Carl Owens Construction built the spur in just over five months. Georgia and West, Inc., completed the design plans with assistance from the PATH Foundation.

“The GreenBelt is a Carrollton treasure. “We’re so excited to open this spur, which will mean greater access to exercise, health services and the shopping, dining and events of downtown for our citizens and visitors.”

Mayor Betty Cason

“We’re committed to being a destination for health,” said Loy Howard, president and CEO of Tanner Health System. “We’re not just a place to go when you’re sick, but a place to go to achieve and maintain wellness. That’s why we’ve been so invested in making this project a reality. I’m sure it will be a welcome addition for all our patients and neighbors.”

Howard said he also hopes the spur will help Tanner’s employees with their wellness goals.

“I’m looking forward to seeing staff walking downtown for lunch, or using the GreenBelt after work,” said Howard. “We should be role models for our community — practice what we preach.”

The project included the construction of approximately 2,400 linear feet of trail and a 30-foot bridge, adding to the 1,000 feet of the spur that was constructed along Dixie Street by Tanner during the construction of their Health Pavilion. The city received a Recreational Trails Grant from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources for $200,000 to assist with the construction of this spur. Total project cost was approximately $650,000.

Bike Summit Coming to Carrollton – City of Carrollton

Nearly 200 bicycle advocates, industry representatives, planners, and elected officials will roll into Carrollton for the 2020 Georgia Bike Summit, September 18-19.

“We are very excited to bring the 11th Annual Georgia Bike Summit to Carrollton,” said Georgia Bikes Executive Director Elliott Caldwell. “With the Bicycle Ride Across Georgia (BRAG) also coming to Carrollton this summer, 2020 is shaping up to be a big year for bicycling in the area.”

Georgia Bikes is a state-level affiliate of the League of American Bicyclists, an organization that advocates for bicycling as a safe and healthy form of transportation and recreation. They work to improve conditions for bicycling by focusing on state policy, bicycle education, and developing local advocacy organizations. In 2017, the League designated Carrollton as a Bicycle Friendly Community (one of 12 such communities in Georgia as of 2020) and the University of West Georgia as a Bike Friendly University.

Each year, Georgia Bike Summit brings together a diverse group of stakeholders to share best practices, disseminate information, and collaborate in building a bicycle-friendly Georgia. A secondary purpose of the summit is to showcase the bicycle culture and amenities of communities throughout the state.

“Carrollton has really focused on being a great place to ride a bicycle,” said Caldwell. “The dedication of many community members, the local government in creating the GreenBelt, as well as better on-road infrastructure, is bearing fruit with these kinds of events coming to Carrollton.“

The Bike Summit is Georgia’s only statewide gathering for bicycle advocates. This is the first time the event is being held in Carrollton after being held in larger cities and on the coast for its first 10 years. Caldwell said the 2016 Georgia Trails Summit in Carrollton, which several Bike Summit organizers attended, positively influenced the decision to award the city the 2020 event.

Hobbs Farm Fit Court Open!

The new Hobbs Farm Fit Court was opened for public use on September 11, 2019, following a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

A $35,000 grant from the Atlanta-based Mary Alice and Bennett Brown Foundation provided most of the funding for the court. The fitness facility features five equipment pieces that offer 120 exercise combinations and routines for beginners and advanced users. The court is ADA compliant and located close to a water fountain and restrooms.

The need for outdoor space catering to teenagers and the active adult population was mentioned during community surveys and town hall meetings when the city was updating its Comprehensive Plan in 2018. The fit court is also expected to attract groups affiliated with Parks and Recreation’s Senior Activities Center and Tanner Health System’s healthy living classes, that meet on and around the GreenBelt.

Hobbs Farm Park is a trailhead for the Carrollton GreenBelt a few blocks from Adamson Square and has become a go-to spot for exercise and healthy activity. The fit court joins the park’s long list of amenities, which includes a one-mile Hobbs Loop, Carrollton Bike Share station, Georgia top-rated public disc golf course, a public kayak launch pad, and a gazebo overlooking the Little Tallapoosa River spillway. Hobbs Farm Park is home to many native plants and wildlife.

While the Hobbs Farm Fit Court is open and fully functional, a bonded, rubber mulch will soon replace the wood-chip surfacing. The installation process was delayed by a few weeks due to the recent hurricane evacuations in Florida that affected the construction crew. Please be mindful and do not enter the court area if safety fencing is present.

Carrollton officially a Bike Friendly Community – Carrollton GreenBelt

In December 2016, the City of Carrollton partnered with Friends of Carrollton GreenBelt (FoCGB) to apply for the Bicycle Friendly Community designation awarded by the League of American Bicyclists (the League). The evaluation process focuses on five Bike Friendly Community building blocks â€“ Engineering, Education, Encouragement, Enforcement & Safety and Evaluation & Planning.

While working on the application, the FoCGB put together a report on bicycling in Carrollton (you can read it at BikeCarrollton.org). The report that supplemented the raw data used in the application was recognized by the League in the Spring 2017 BFC Highlights!

Carrollton Becomes Bicycle Friendly Community!

On May 11, 2017, the League recognized new and returning communities, awarding Carrollton the Bronze BFC award!

Today, the League of American Bicyclists recognized 37 communities with Bicycle Friendly Community awards out of 50 applicants. This round saw 6 communities move up from an Honorable Mention to Bronze, 9 communities receive a Bronze award on their first application, and 22 communities renewing as BFCs, including 5 that moved from a Bronze to Silver award.

These 37 communities join a group of communities, in all 50 states, that are transforming their neighborhoods. There are now 416 communities currently recognized with a BFC award for their efforts to make biking better.

This round was an amazing mix of communities, from leading communities such as Fort Collins, CO, which received a Platinum award; to communities being transformed by investments in biking such as Carrollton, GA; and communities returning to the BFC program, such as Miami Beach, FL; which re-applied after first being recognized 14 years ago.

(Read more here.)

The state of Georgia is currently ranked #25 in bike friendliness, with (now) 10 communities at bronze level.

In addition to the Bike Friendly Community, the Bike Friendly America initiative also recognizes Bike Friendly Universities and Bike Friendly Businesses.

If you would like to learn more about those programs, please contact us and we will be happy to share any information that can help other organizations become BFA certified!

The Bicycle Friendly Community Report Card is intended to give highlighted information about each
community that is useful for comparison between communities and as a reference for each community.

The top of the Report Card shows the name of the community and a few key facts including its
population, size, population density, and any Bicycle Friendly America participants that are within the
community. More on how to read the card.

Carrollton, Ga, received a Bronze Designation!

Exciting things are happening all around the city!

The weather could not be better to come out and celebrate the new Zagster bike share. 50 cruiser bikes docked in 10 stations create a network that will allow the program members to leave the car behind and grab a bike for a lunch break ride to their favorite sandwich shop, or explore the Carrollton GreenBelt – one trailhead at a time! Look for a location close to you here.

The program, which is 100% sponsored by Tanner Health System, the University of West Georgia, and Southwire Company, will move Carrollton another step closer to, quoting Tanner’s famous initiative – getting healthy and living well. The bike-share program advances the efforts to make Carrollton a healthy and pleasant place to live and work. Bicycling, just like walking, is one of the easiest forms of physical activity that can be integrated into day-to-day life. It is enjoyable, efficient, saves money, time and is good for the environment.

Join us for the opening!

The unveiling ceremony will take place on Friday, February 3, at 1.30 pm

at Laura’s Park at Hays Mill Trailhead

(480 Hays Mill Road, Carrollton, Georgia 30117)!

The Zagster bike share varies slightly from other short-term bike rental programs and caters to smaller communities. The bikes are rented for free for an hour – under the membership contract. Additional charges apply for each extra hour of use. The bikes are also equipped with locks, which makes it easy to plan the trips around the places of interest, versus bike share station locations.
