In December 2016, the City of Carrollton partnered with Friends of Carrollton GreenBelt (FoCGB) to apply for the Bicycle Friendly Community designation awarded by the League of American Bicyclists (the League). The evaluation process focuses on five Bike Friendly Community building blocks – Engineering, Education, Encouragement, Enforcement & Safety and Evaluation & Planning.
While working on the application, the FoCGB put together a report on bicycling in Carrollton (you can read it at BikeCarrollton.org). The report that supplemented the raw data used in the application was recognized by the League in the Spring 2017 BFC Highlights!
Carrollton Becomes Bicycle Friendly Community!
On May 11, 2017, the League recognized new and returning communities, awarding Carrollton the Bronze BFC award!
Today, the League of American Bicyclists recognized 37 communities with Bicycle Friendly Community awards out of 50 applicants. This round saw 6 communities move up from an Honorable Mention to Bronze, 9 communities receive a Bronze award on their first application, and 22 communities renewing as BFCs, including 5 that moved from a Bronze to Silver award.
These 37 communities join a group of communities, in all 50 states, that are transforming their neighborhoods. There are now 416 communities currently recognized with a BFC award for their efforts to make biking better.
This round was an amazing mix of communities, from leading communities such as Fort Collins, CO, which received a Platinum award; to communities being transformed by investments in biking such as Carrollton, GA; and communities returning to the BFC program, such as Miami Beach, FL; which re-applied after first being recognized 14 years ago.
The state of Georgia is currently ranked #25 in bike friendliness, with (now) 10 communities at bronze level.
If you would like to learn more about those programs, please contact us and we will be happy to share any information that can help other organizations become BFA certified!
The Bicycle Friendly Community Report Card is intended to give highlighted information about each
community that is useful for comparison between communities and as a reference for each community.
The top of the Report Card shows the name of the community and a few key facts including its
population, size, population density, and any Bicycle Friendly America participants that are within the
community. More on how to read the card.
